Iowa business owners more upbeat. Many plan to hire

The quarterly Hamilton Hiring Survey of small and medium businesses reports positive changes in the outlook of Iowa business owners.

While many remain concerned by health care costs, business regulations, the government budget and debt, 55 percent of owners are optimistic about 2nd quarter job growth, up 8 percent from the previous survey.

Increased profits and demand are the reasons 47 percent say they’ll hire mid- to upper-level positions within the next quarter.  Only 3 percent foresee a future reduction in force.

Also encouraging is Iowa’s January 5.4 unemployment rate — the lowest  since late 2008, and the sixth lowest rate in the nation.
